A strategic purchasing manager is responsible for locating and maintaining the best sources of supply for the components, materials and services a company needs. While purchasing managers have traditionally focused on finding the lowest-cost suppliers, strategic purchasing managers consider all aspects of their relationship with suppliers, including quality, value and the ability to respond quickly to changing supply requirements. They aim to select suppliers that can act as long-term partners and help the company meet its growth objectives.

Skills

Strategic purchasing managers must have good analytical abilities to assess the performance of suppliers against criteria such as quality, cost, reliability, ability to innovate and financial stability. They need financial skills to assess the total cost of dealing with a supplier, including price and factors such as the costs of delivery, administration quality control and inventory. These managers must have good interpersonal and negotiating skills to build effective working relationships with supply partners.
